Tips for taking a child fishing:

I hope you will find these first hand observations useful. I will continue to write about kids and fishing, it is essential to introduce children to the sport of fishing.

If you are going after smaller fish, pan fish, etc. leave your rod home, only take the kids rods, if you are a veteran fisherman this is hard, but you will be glad you did. Take the kids on your boat if you have one, try to have access to a beach you can pull up to and let the kids swim after they get bored, 2-2 1/2 hrs. if they are catching fish, one hour if they are not catching fish, remember this is not about you, you are introducing your children to a life long sport, don't push them, they will be happy to catch whatever is biting, we have had as much fun with trash fish as with gamefish.

Make sure to take sandwiches and treats, nothing makes the day go by like these 2 items and of course a cold drink for the kids, leave the cocktails at home, we are role models whether we like it or not. You may want to bring a book that identifies the species of fish native to the area you are fishing. I have also brought a book that featured shipwrecks in the area and we have fished these wrecks, caught fish and learned a little history. Let them take the lead, kid's curiosity will get them looking at the books, pirate books are great as well as any type of nautical book.

Don't forget the camera, you will want pictures and your kids will want pictures of their catch. Of course let's not forget the filet knife so they can eat the catch, unless of course it's a carp or something that you would not like to eat. That's where the stories about catch and release come in handy or create your own reason for not taking the fish home.

If you catch fish try to cook them that night while the memory is still fresh in your childs mind that might be the best meal they ever have, provided you know how to cook.

Always remember you are the teacher, set good examples, have fun, let them drive the boat, teach them about navigation, boating rules and a general appreciation for all things nautical, you will thank yourself down the road and you might get your new best fishing buddy out of the deal.
